The Urban League of Hudson County along with a group of community leaders founded the Jersey City Community Charter School in 1997. The school received its first charter in January, 1997 and officially opened its doors in September 1997 with 80 kindergarten students. Since that time the school has increased its enrollment adding one grade per year. The total enrollment for 2000-2001 school year is 264 students in grades K-3.In February, 2001 after four successful years of implementation, the school was awarded its second charter period of five additional years. The school continues to increase its enrollment by one grade per year. The increase in enrollment is being met with the expansion of the school's facility.
